YOUR BRIDGE TO BRILLIANCE
Matthew from Leddy Set Go Productions here. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Leddy Vibes, a musician who just released his self-titled debut album on BandCamp and is shamelessly using me to promote it.
Matthew: Leddy Vibes, thanks for speaking with me today. You’re very handsome.
Leddy Vibes: You’re not so bad yourself.
Matthew: Tell us about the album.
Leddy Vibes: It’s a musical trip, a journey through mellifluous computer melodies and funky fresh beats.
Matthew: So you’re one of those artificial intelligence computer music makers?
Leddy Vibes: Nah, man. No AI—just experimenting with garageband loops and some cool samples from interesting songs. I also threw in some original piano progressions in there.
Matthew: What’s a garageband loop?
Leddy Vibes: Loops are beats and musical samples built into the garageband software which you can edit and layer into a song, like pieces of a puzzle.
Matthew: Isn’t that cheating?
Leddy Vibes: In that case, most hip hop and electronic dance music is cheating.
Matthew: Fair enough—what original elements do you bring into your tracks?
Leddy Vibes: First, I was messing around with old school hip hop beats and I threw in some vocals from Grandmaster Flash on top and I liked it.
Then, I started reversing samples from songs I enjoy, like “In Space” by Röyksopp and “You Only Live Twice” from the James Bond film score composed by John Barry… and I surprised myself by creating something totally different, totally original.
Matthew: And then you brought me in to help you mix it?
Leddy Vibes: Yeah, I needed your computer skills and cinematic vision.
Matthew: That’s right, I had fun repurposing some music videos and movie scenes to create cinema that complements your music.
Leddy Vibes: No doubt— very cool how those scenes from A Space Odyssey synced up with my song called “Spaced.”
Matthew: Or that dialogue from Trainspotting, “choose life”— how did that become a house track?
Leddy Vibes: Actually, I was just trying to make a track like Darude’s “Sandstorm” at 136 beats per minute but I felt that it needed some dialogue on top and I found it in the Trainspotting sequel and it worked really well, and then you transformed it into a very cool music video.
Matthew: Thanks, the music and the visuals lined up nicely to create an odd sense of cinematic nostalgia. What other movie references are in this album?
Leddy Vibes: Hmm, we mashed up the track “Mambo” with a film called Mambo Kings, we’ve got Prince’s Purple Rain in the music video for “Love Jungle,” and other surprises if you check out the tracks and the videos that go with it.
Matthew: Nice, I like the track “Blazing” which has a totally original video.
Leddy Vibes: It’s pure fire; this fire dancer named Iridesza did a jaw-dropping performance and I knew I had to call the track “Blazing”…
Matthew: Got other music in the works?
Leddy Vibes: I’m always learning, I’ve got a bunch of tracks in development… but I’m planning to spend some time away from the computer to just jam on my acoustic guitar and see what sticks…
Matthew: That’s a plot twist.
Leddy Vibes: Yeah, and I’ve got another plot twist for you too.
Matthew: What’s that?
Leddy Vibes: I am you.
Matthew: You are me?
Leddy Vibes: And we are all together.
Matthew: Goo goo gajoob.
Leddy Vibes: I am Matthew’s complete lack of surprise.
Matthew: The greatest trick you ever pulled was convincing me that you existed.
Leddy Vibes: And just like that…
… I’m gone.
